Land and Sea Dept. is excited to partner with Hat & Beard Press on the opening of "CHICAGO 1968: THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING,” a book and photo exhibition featuring the work of Terry Southern and Michael Cooper, from September 14, 2018 – October 7, 2018

Editors Nile Southern and Adam Cooper, having dreamt for many years about a print collaboration featuring their fathers’ collective work, here present a kaleidoscopic, on-the-ground account of the notorious protests (and historic riots that followed) that took place in Lincoln and Grant parks during the 1968 Democratic National Convention, 50 years ago this summer. Told primarily through Terry Southern’s words and Michael Cooper’s photographs, Chicago 1968: The Whole World is Watching is Nile and Adam’s tribute to two great artists of the 20th century, who happen to be their fathers.

Timed to coincide with the 50-year anniversary of the protests, the 136-page book, with dozens of Michael Cooper’s unpublished never-before-seen photographs, will be out September 14th, the same day as the opening of the exhibit being held at Land & Sea Department, an alternative arts and culture space on Chicago’s North Side.

Proto-New Journalist, novelist, and screenwriter Terry Southern [Candy, The Magic Christian, Dr. Strangelove, Easy Rider] traveled to Chicago that fateful year to report on the convention with William S. Burroughs and Jean Genet for Esquire magazine. Rock photographer extraordinaire Michael Cooper, famous for his indelible images of the Rolling Stones and the cover of the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart's Club album, was there as the all-seeing lens. Together they captured the turbulence and civil unrest from which the whole country was reeling that year and crystallized it in words and pictures for all of time.

“They left without a murmur, as though they were guilty of something and had been discovered—which was, in fact, the case; they were FBI agents, attempting to discredit the demonstration by their conduct.”

LSD x Hopewell

Land and Sea Dept. collaborated with Hopewell Brewing on a custom beer!

Bar teams from Parson’s Chicken & Fish, Longman & Eagle, and Game Room (Charlie Schott, Tony Correale, and Dave Thompson, respectively), headed to Hopewell to collaborate with their team (owners Stephen Bossu, Samantha Lee, and Jonathan Fritz) on the beer, which is a summertime crusher (no surprises there), which packs the big punch of Ekuanot and Dr. Rudi hops in a low-key Pale Ale form. With stone fruit and pine at the core, a soft body and balanced bitterness tether its eccentric side.

The can was custom designed by the LSD Art Dept., and it’s rolling out this week at Parson’s, Longman & Eagle, Game Room, Lonesome Rose, and Hopewell’s tap room.

To celebrate, we’re having a beer crawl this Friday, June 29! We’ll start at Game Room around 2pm and trolley our way through Logan, with stops at Parson’s, Longman, and ending at Hopewell. Reserve your spot here with a $5 donation to Howard Brown Health.

Shift-Ease + The Outpost
b25ee510-02bd-4507-be04-949a093dde20.jpg

Tonight is a double whammy of good drinks and good vibes at Lost Lake.

It’s the final night of The Outpost, bartender Matthew Colin Clark’s homage to the safe havens created by small town gay bars across the country. From Matthew: “I’m inspired by small town gay bars, and the ways they can become a haven and home for those outcast and marginalized by society-at-large. Everyone deserves a little escape for the price of a drink, and The Outpost is an expression of my own escapist ‘tiki’ fantasy through the lens of a country western gay bar.”

On top of that, SHIFT-EASE, Lost Lake’s monthly charitable party, is back, this time fighting the adminstration’s actions at the border. Profits from Shift-Ease drink sales will directly benefit Organized Communities Against Deportation, an undocumented-led group that organizes against deportations, detention, criminalization and incarceration of Black, brown, and immigrant communities in Chicago and the surrounding areas.

The Outpost is open at 5pm, and Shift-Ease gets going at 9pm — come and post up for the night!
