All of our restaurants and bars will be championing women-run or owned brands this IWD with special menus. We're proud to work with local favorites Hopewell Brewing Co. (co-founder Samantha Lee), Right Bee Cider (co-founder Katie Morgan), North Shore Distillery (co-founder Sonja Kassebaum), Metroplitan Brewing (co-founder Tracy Hurst) and Koval Distillery (co-founder Sonat Birnecker), plus Mexico-based Pueblo Viejo(owner Carmen Villarreal), and Italian Grappa Nonino (owned by sisters Cristina, Antonella and Elisabetta Nonino).

Cherry Circle Room will be highlighting female winemakers, including Angela Osborne of A Tribute to Grace, Anne and Catherine Parent of Domaine Anne Parent, Maggie Harrison of Antica TerraEva Fricke of her eponymous winery, Dominique Moreau of Marie Courtin, Esther Pinuaga of Bodegas Pinuaga, Nancy Irelan of Red Tail Ridge, and Diana Snowden Seysses of Snowden Vineyards

Longman & Eagle will even have a special IWD whisky flight (available in the restaurant and OSB), featuring three female-led distilleries: Allison Parc and Brenne French Single Malt Whisky, Angela & Maggie Moore of Virginia Distillery Co., and Pam Heilmann & Andrea Wilson of Michter's

On the culinary side, we're showcasing three women-owned farms: Three Sisters Gardens' Tracey Vowell and Kathe Roybal (from Kankakee!), Michigan's Werp Farms, co-owned by Tina Werp, and Nettle Meadow Farm (Warrensburg, NY), which is owned by Sheila Flanagan and Lorraine Lambiase.

Proceeds from the featured items will benefit Girls in the Game, a non-profit (started in Chicago) empowering young women to discover their strength and lead with confidence through fun and active sports, health and leadership programs.

Land and Sea Dept. is lucky to have lots of women running many of the shows we've got going on. Femme identifying people run many of our restaurants and bars. Handle our finances. Oversee our events. Innovate on the line. Pastry. Social Media. They hold it it down serving, bartending, running, hosting, barista-ing. Chances are, if you like something we're doing, a woman had her hand in it. Thank goddess.

We asked a few of our women in charge to share some advice, words of wisdom, or things to watch out for. Here's what they had to say:

unnamed (2).jpg

Kerri Petric
Assistant General Manager - Drawing Room, Game Room, Milk Room

“The future of women in hospitality is immensely bright, and I work for the best company that exhibits this fact. Keep working together, supporting, learning from each other, and we will be unstoppable!”

unnamed (3).jpg

Angela Diaz
Executive Pastry Chef - Cherry Circle Room, Drawing Room, Game Room, Milk Room

"My advice is be yourself. It's hard in the kitchen sometimes because you want to fit into this (once) male-dominated kitchen environment, but at the end of the day you will accomplish more and earn more respect when you do you. And in the hardest of times, when you feel like you want to compare yourself to your fellow male co-worker, be stronger and keep a level and equal mindset.

Be feminine and show pride in it, in whatever way that means to you. GIRL power is YOU power."

unnamed (4).jpg

Elana Green
Executive Director, Land and Sea Dept.

“Let go of what doesn’t make you better. That’s not to say that you won’t have bad days or errors. I’ve made mistakes, and I learned from them. But channeling your energy towards the positive will yield a much better end result. I’m constantly looking at how we can do things better, make our jobs and business better, and these traits both fuel and feed my career.”

unnamed (5).jpg

Ginny Cook
Director of Events, Land and Sea Dept.

"I'd advise against getting to the point that you feel 'above' doing anything. As long as you are willing and able to do the same work as the people around you, you will always be respected and supported. No one loves to haul trash, but seeing your boss do it makes you 100% more willing to do it yourself."

unnamed (6).jpg

Mia Luna
General Manager, Lost Lake

“Working with so many womxn at Lost Lake the last few years has been a DREAM. Watching them champion each other, and offer unwavering support for each other has drastically changed my perspective on my own worth and capabilities both in and out of work. They are simultaneously fearless and strong, yet vulnerable and empathic. Find people like this to work with, to hire, and to befriend — you’ll be in good company when you make it to the top."

Joey Garfield

DSCF4058-664x1024.jpg

We’re excited to work with artist Joey Garfield on an installation in the Drawing Room of the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel. Drifters will be in the case through May 30.

Drift : /drift/ • verb 1: to be carried slowly by a current of air or water 2: To flow or wander gradually. Synonym bob, float, meander. 3: Phrase used for understanding the general meaning and intention of a remark –Drifter: /drif-ter/ • noun 1: a derelict.

Garfield’s work honors both the wheel and wood. Growing up during the heyday of skateboard culture, he binds new, vintage, and handmade wheels and trucks with unique wood pieces from nature. All together, the wood, wheels and trucks create a new Minimalist form that is both grounded and uplifting.

Join us in the Drawing Room on Thursday, May 24 from 6-8p for an opening reception and artist talk with Joey Garfield. There will be food and drinks available for purchase. Come check out the installation and hear about Garfield’s work!

MAS Context Benefit for Disaster Relief
MAS_BEN1.png

Join us on the second floor of the Chicago Athletic Association hotel on Saturday, October 7, to raise money for disaster relief in both Mexico City and Puerto Rico. Land and Sea Dept. is partnering with MAS Context on a special menu of cocktails available all day in Drawing Room and Game Room — 100% of proceeds from these cocktails, beer, and wine will be donated to two disaster relief charities.

We’ll send proceeds to the Puerto Rico Real-Time Recovery Fund, which is providing relief to those recovering from Hurricane Maria, and we’ll also be contributing to Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal’s campaign to support earthquake relief in Mexico.

We’re also very lucky to host Mexico City based architect Michel Rojkind in Drawing Room at 5pm. Michel will be talking about rebuilding the city following the earthquake. We hope you can join us!

Big thanks to all of our generous sponsors: Heaven Hill, Fever-Tree, Testa Produce, Just Ice, Maison Ferrand and Plantation.

They Call Us The Seekers
SEEKERS_MAIN-819x1024.jpg

In celebration of the Chicago Marathon, we’re excited to work with artist Adam Geremia on an installation in the Drawing Room of the Chicago Athletic Association. They Call Us The Seekers will be in the case until November 5.

We are The Seekers, an intentional community of meditative runners. The Seekers reject the notion that faster is better. Personal athleticism has been co-opted by the running-industrial complex, in which selling product is more important than spiritual awakening.

Our goal: reclaim running with the power transcendent experience through movement. What we’re seeking can’t be bought or sold, it can’t be measured in miles. We seek the ecstatic.

Join us at theycallustheseekers.com.

Adam Geremia is the founder and leader of The Seekers. He has several projects exploring the nature of consciousness, the senses, and creating experiences that connect us to our bodies and our environment. He advocates for short shorts.

See more of his work at adamgeremia.com.

BACKROOM

February 25 – March 25

The Chicago Athletic Association hotel, The Field Museum, Johalla Projects and Land and Sea Dept. are excited to announce the opening of The Backroom – a pop-up bar experience opening on Saturday, February 25, in the hotel’s ground floor Tank space (formerly the Chicago Athletic Association’s pool). The bar will be open on Friday and Saturday nights from 5pm – midnight through March 25.

Following last summer’s Cherry Circle Yacht Club pop-up bar, The Backroom will celebrate Specimens: Unlocking the Secrets of Life, an upcoming special exhibition taking a deep dive into The Field Museum’s vast collections, opening March 10. The pop-up, designed by Chicago-based art gallery Johalla Projects and operated by Land and Sea Dept., will feature actual specimens from the Field’s huge collection, available to guests to explore for the first time off museum grounds.

The Backroom will feature interactive programming with Field Museum professionals in the space each night on a variety of topics, ranging from space to taxidermy and more (full schedule below). All events will be free, and will give guests the rare opportunity to chat in person with leading experts in the fields of botany, zoology, geology, history, and more, all while enjoying cocktails from LSD beverage director Paul McGee. The bar will also offer late night programming until midnight following each workshop, like DJs, trivia, karaoke, and more – stay tuned for more details.

LSD at Chicago Printers Guild Publishers Fair

Since 2009 the Chicago Printers Guild (CPG) has cultivated print culture through monthly meetings of its members. This year, the CPG is holding its first annual publishers fair, happening at Elastic Arts in Logan Square on November 18 and 19. Over the course of the two days, the CPG hopes to offer a strong platform of exchange for the public to intersect with artists who “make things print.”

Lots of our favorite artists and publishers will be there (Nadine Nakanishi and Nick Butcher of Sonnenzimmer, Clay Hickson of Tan & Loose Press, Ryan Duggan of Drug Factory Press, and many more!), and Land and Sea Dept. will be on hand for drinks and refreshments both days.

Full details are here – hope to see you there.

Hot Heels Soul Club

The Chicago Athletic Association, Land and Sea Dept., Do 312, and 1833 are excited to present HOT HEELS SOUL CLUB on November 18, 19, and 20. Stagg Court, the CAA’s historic full sized basketball court, will be transformed into a skate rink straight out of your roller disco fantasies.

Each skate session will feature music from DJs Johnny Walker, Alex White, Wayne Montana, and Stefan Ponce and food & drink from Game Room.

Full details and tickets available here.

Jens Lekman Storytelling
storytelling-lekman.jpg

Land and Sea Dept. and the Chicago Athletic Association are excited to welcome Jens Lekman to the hotel’s storytelling series. Jens will be joining Kevin Warwick (The Reader, AV Club) for a fireside chat in the Drawing Room on Thursday, November 3 (following his sold out show at Lincoln Hall on the 2nd). Come by to hear them chat about Jens’ (super) limited US tour, old favorites, his wide-spanning career, and more.

Seating is limited and on a first come, first served basis – we hope you can join us.

Jens Lekman, born and reared in Gothenburg, Sweden, is a songwriter, adventurer and retired bingo hall employee. Traveling our globe as a wide-open receptor of all it has to offer, Lekman repurposes for his own oeuvre the world’s great, lost pop hooks of past and present. He breathes into them his droll senses of humor, romance and melody and gives them newfound buoyancy. Since his 2004 trifecta of EPs (Maples Leaves, Rocky Dennis in Heaven, You Are the Light) and right on through his acclaimed 2007 full-length, Night Falls Over Kortedala and 2012′s touchingly personal I Know What Love Isn’t, Lekman has made hopeless romantics of us all. In a musical language that has roots in the work of Arthur Russell, The Magnetic Fields, Calvin Johnson and Modern Lovers, Lekman’s songs serve as a reminder to look closer at the world around us, to appreciate the beauty when it’s both in and out of context; at its most heartbreaking, its most loving, and its most absurd.

Nathaniel Russell

We’ve been enjoying spending time with Nathaniel Russell’s Slow Comet art installation at the Chicago Athletic Association.

But, as we know, nothing gold can stay, and soon it will be time for the work to make its way back to Nathaniel’s doorstep. The pieces are all currently for sale, so if you are interested in purchasing a real art work, feel free to reach out to him via Instagram. Make your way to the hotel to check out the work – it’s up through June 30.

Cherry Circle Yacht Club at Chicago Athletic Association
ccyc-bkgd4.png

Land and Sea Dept. and the Chicago Athletic Association hotel are going nautical this summer with the Cherry Circle Yacht Club,  a bar concept popping up on the ground floor of the CAA from June 10 – June 26.

The pop-up’s opening weekend coincides with the world-renowned America’s Cupsailing competition, happening on Lake Michigan for the first time on June 10 – 12.

The Cherry Circle Yacht Club is inspired by the Chicago Athletic Association’s own yacht team from the early 20th century, and is named after their boat, the Cherry Circle. The concept was developed Chicago-based art gallery Johalla Projects and Ship to Shore Productions, content creators specializing in science, nature, and conservation story telling. Johalla Projects also designed the space, which will be housed in a freestanding structure in the hotel’s Tank event space, outfitted in vintage furniture, maritime-inspired décor, and coastal touches.

Land and Sea Dept. will be operating the bar, which will feature a menu of historic and nautically inclined cocktails from beverage director Paul McGee, alongside a selection of beer from Anchor Brewing and champagne from Moët-Hennessey.

LSD and the CAA will be collaborating on an event schedule for the CCYC – stay tuned here for more.

June 16, 7pm:
Storytelling Series: Ship To Shore Productions with Photographer & Great Lakes Surfer Mike Killion
