BACKROOM

February 25 – March 25

The Chicago Athletic Association hotel, The Field Museum, Johalla Projects and Land and Sea Dept. are excited to announce the opening of The Backroom – a pop-up bar experience opening on Saturday, February 25, in the hotel’s ground floor Tank space (formerly the Chicago Athletic Association’s pool). The bar will be open on Friday and Saturday nights from 5pm – midnight through March 25.

Following last summer’s Cherry Circle Yacht Club pop-up bar, The Backroom will celebrate Specimens: Unlocking the Secrets of Life, an upcoming special exhibition taking a deep dive into The Field Museum’s vast collections, opening March 10. The pop-up, designed by Chicago-based art gallery Johalla Projects and operated by Land and Sea Dept., will feature actual specimens from the Field’s huge collection, available to guests to explore for the first time off museum grounds.

The Backroom will feature interactive programming with Field Museum professionals in the space each night on a variety of topics, ranging from space to taxidermy and more (full schedule below). All events will be free, and will give guests the rare opportunity to chat in person with leading experts in the fields of botany, zoology, geology, history, and more, all while enjoying cocktails from LSD beverage director Paul McGee. The bar will also offer late night programming until midnight following each workshop, like DJs, trivia, karaoke, and more – stay tuned for more details.

Shift-Ease at Lost Lake

Back in March of last year, Lost Lake’s kitchen had a pretty bad electrical fire. The Chicago Fire Department raced to our rescue, contained the blaze, and made sure no one was hurt — but smoke damage had us closed for nearly a month. In the interim, our bar community rallied around the Lost Lake crew, generously hosting us for pop-ups that put cash in our tip-based bartenders’ pockets.

Each pop-up was themed, and one of those themes was “SHIFT-EASE”. The idea was that in order to ease the pain of lost shifts, we’d serve a menu of our favorite “shifties” — the cocktails we make ourselves as we breakdown the bar at the end of a long shift. To make sure it’s an authentic shifty, we pumped in our breakin-down-the-bar soundtrack (hint: it’s Champagne Papi).

Now that we’re looking forward to reconstructing our kitchen and dreaming up big things for 2017, we’re gonna turn SHIFT-EASE into a monthly charitable party. On the fourth Tuesday of every month, from 9pm-2am, we’ll be serving our favorite shifty cocktails in the name of that month’s good cause.

For the first installment on January 24th, we’re inviting the firefighters that extinguished the blaze, and donating $1 from every Damoiseau daiquiri sold to CFD Engine 106’s charity of choice: Ignite the Spirit. We’ll also be donating $5 of every Corn N’ Oil sold to Chicago nonprofit Embarc in Jacob Johnson’s honor — a bright, young Chicagoan who recently passed.

Menu:
Damoiseau Daiquiri – Damoiseau Virgin Cane Rhum Agricole, Lime, Sugar ($8)
Classic (shaken and served up)
Party Girl Style (served with crushed ice)
Party Boy Dump ‘em Out (served with ‘dirty’ ice)

Corn N’ Oil – Clement Select Barrel Rhum Agricole, Blackstrap Rum, Falernum, Lime ($10)

Parson's Food Drive

Parson’s Chicken and Fish is helping us keep that holiday spirit alive even after the New Year hits. Now through Valentine’s Day, Parson’s will be home to a donation bin for the Greater Chicago Food Depository. For every two cans of (non-expired, edible, good) food you bring in, you get a can of Modelo on the house.

In particular, they’re looking for peanut butter and a variety of canned items: Beans, chili, soup, stew, fruit, fish and vegetables.

You can even participate online without leaving your house! But…you should probably come have a beer at Parson’s. Just swing by the grocery on your way.
