Safe, Free and Legal: A Fundraiser for the Midwest Action Coalition
safefreelegal-04.jpg

For the month of July, Land and Sea Dept. will be partnering with our friends at Hopewell Brewing Co. on SAFE, FREE, AND LEGAL — a campaign to raise money for the Midwest Access Coalition. The Midwest Access Coalition is a practical abortion fund that helps people traveling to, from, and within the Midwest access a safe, legal abortion with support in the following areas: travel coordination and costs, lodging, food, medicine, and emotional support.

We'll be donating sales from Hopewell's LSD Pale Ale at all of our properties that carry it:Cherry Circle Room, Drawing Room, Game Room, Golden Teardrops, Lonesome Rose, Longman & Eagle, and both Parson's Chicken and Fish locations. We'll also be having a closing, blow-out fundraiser at Hopewell Brewing on Saturday, August 3, from 1-5pm. Lonesome Rose will be serving up tacos and more, and Hopewell will donate proceeds from the LSD Pale Ale for the day.

Help us keep abortion accessible for women in neighboring states — come drink with us this July.Safe, Free and Legal:

Canada Day at Lost Lake
canada-day.png

Lost Lake is celebrating Canada Day with Canadians! And they’re really bringing their “eh” game: Canadian bartenders, Canadian Spirits, and Canadian food by a Canadian chef!

Led by Mike Ryan (Canadian) and featuring guest bartenders Christina Veira (Canadian) and Juliana Wolkowski (Canadian) — with a special appearance by Dave Mitton (Canadian) — they’ll be serving a menu of cocktails featuring Lot 40, Pike Creek, Gooderham & Worts, and J.P. Wiser's (you guessed it, all Canadian!)

Also on offer will be a menu of Canadian snacks by chef Will Serre (Canadian) and Lost Lake’s Fred Noinaj (sorry, not Canadian) will feature Poutine (mushroom gravy and goat cheese curds over fries), Maple Braised Pork Belly (Seared and served on toast with charred pickled onions and cured egg yolk), and Wilensky's Special (Salami, bologna, yellow mustard, and swiss on a kaiser roll; pickle on the side).

And because when our political climate turns sour, a go-to joke seems to be “I’m moving to Canada!”, we’re going to be donating $1 of each Canadian item sold (food and drink) to Organized Communities Against Deportation (OCAD) — an undocumented-led group that organizes against deportations, detention, criminalization, and incarceration, of Black, brown, and immigrant communities in Chicago and surrounding areas.

And those who arrive donning Canadian Tuxedos, there will be special treats... See you there, eh!

Asians Fry Chicken at Lost Lake
afc-instagram.png

Lost Lake’s executive chef Fred Noinaj has curated a very special edition of #SHIFTEASE in honor of Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, celebrated each May.

Chef Fred: “I wanted this month’s #SHIFTEASE to be a big one. I called up some friends, and together we’re going to open a one-night-only fried chicken shop: AFC (Asians Fry Chicken)!

AFC is a chance to celebrate our heritage through the language of fried chicken. As a child, it is not always apparent that being different is cool. Being the kid with the "weird" lunch who spoke an odd language made me ashamed of celebrating my ethnicity until I got older. Being able to bring friends together with similar upbringings to celebrate our cuisines is extremely empowering, especially because we are doing it for a good cause.”

KAN-WIN
kan-win.org
KAN-WIN's mission is to eradicate all forms of violence against women, including domestic violence and sexual assault, by empowering Asian American survivors and engaging the community through culturally competent services, community education and outreach, and advocacy.

KAN-WIN is one of the premier agencies in the U.S. with the expertise in serving Asian American & immigrant survivors of gender-based violence. Through a set of intensive wrap-around services, including a multilingual 24-hour hotline, legal advocacy, transitional housing program, etc., they help address complex and unique barriers that many immigrant survivors face as they seek to escape from abuse. All of their services are free and confidential, and they strive to provide them in the survivor’s own language.

KAN-WIN VISION
Our vision is to create healthy communities free from violence and oppression, in which all women and children have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

We believe that all women have the right to live free from violence and oppression.

We believe that women can best act on the interests of women.

We believe that violence against women is one symptom of the subordination of women in society. Until women are recognized as equals, violence against women will be tolerated and perpetuated.

We believe that our objective as a woman-centered feminist organization is to create social change.

We believe that abusive situations can be changed and that women can be empowered through education, advocacy, and intervention.

We recognize that immigrant women and women with disabilities are especially vulnerable to domestic violence and sexual assault.

We work collectively to promote the philosophy of equality without regard to race, class, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.

We operate through a consensual decision-making process.

#SHIFTEASE Info:
What is #SHIFTEASE?
#SHIFTEASE began as a pop-up party: While Lost Lake was temporarily closed by a kitchen fire early in 2016, our bar community hosted us for a series of pop-ups that kept tips in our pockets. ‘Shifties’ are the drinks we make ourselves after a long shift, and #SHIFTEASE was a way to ease the financial pain of lost shifts by sharing that breaking-down-the-bar experience with you. Now we’re using this party platform to support local organizations working for progressive racial, economic, and gender justice. To date, #SHIFTEASE has raised over $20,000 for grassroots organizations working in Chicago.

Reckless Eagle Izakaya at L&E
reckless-izakaya-insta.png

This May, head to Longman & Eagle for Reckless Eagle Izakaya! In a hybrid celebration of the casual Japanese pubs and the rockabilly revival (motorcycles and all) that swept Tokyo in the mid-twentieth century, the OSB will be fully transformed from Sunday, May 5 - Thursday, May 9, from 5pm-midnight.

On the food side, Chef Max Robbins will explore the traditional robatayaki method of grilling over charcoal with a full menu of offerings like reba (chicken liver), hatsu (duck heart), tarabagani (king crab) and more. He’ll also have premium raw nigiri, oyster shooters, and hand rolls. A range of small and large bar snacks will also be available nightly including asari no sakamashi (clam and sake soup), karage (fried chicken with napa slaw), and wagyu katsu sandwiches on milk bread.

Izakayas are pubs after all, and Longman never skimps on the drinks. Assistant bar manager Jake Dean’s menu will embody the spirit of the classic Izakaya offerings, with Sapporo Lager, Jim Beam Highballs, Japanese whisky (Hakushu 12, and Yamazaki 18), and sake, for bombing (Dassai 50 Junmai Daiginjo), and sipping (Yusho Kikisui Nama Genshu — yes, from our old neighbors at Yusho!). He’s also put together two cockails — one shaken, one stirred. The shaken is a sake-based lychee colada (Twisted White Light) and the stirred is a white boulevardier with a premium Japanese whiskey base (Waves Through Paradise).

Join us on Sunday, May 5, for an opening party! From 8-10pm, head to OSB for the full pop-up menu of food and drinks, plus karaoke.
