Earth Day 2018: Protect This Land
2018-2.png

The Garfield Park Conservatory AllianceLand and Sea Dept., and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) are excited to partner on our annual Earth Day celebration, held on April 26 at the beautiful Garfield Park Conservatory.

Since last inauguration day, much of the NRDC’s work has been litigation based — suing the president and his administration on behalf of Americans when the country’s core environmental laws are in danger. One piece of that is the attempt to shrink public lands and national parks to open them up to development.

Earth Day: Protect This Land will act as a call to action, a fundraiser, and a good old fashioned party, all in the name of reclaiming our country’s green space.

Profits from ticket sales will be split between the NRDC and the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance, helping them continue their important work protecting the nation’s public parks (which belong to all of us).

Indiana’s Kevin Krauter (Hoops) will kick off the evening with a live set. Most recently, the Muncie-based singer songwriter opened for Whitney at their Valentine’s Day show at Thalia Hall. He’ll bring a full band in for his performance in the Conservatory’s plant-filled Horticulture Hall.

Chicago’s own Malcolm London will take the stage following Kevin Krauter. Called the Gil Scott-Heron of this generation by Cornel West, Malcolm London is an internationally recognized Chicago poet, activist, educator and musician.

DJ Jill Hopkins (host of Vocalo’sThe Morning AMp) will close out the night with a star-lit dance party under Hortifulture Hall’s glass tiled roof.

The entire evening will be hosted by Chicago-based comedian Tien Tran (Second City Mainstage ensemble member).

The NRDC will have information and simple action items available for guests interested in fighting the administrations’ attacks on our national parks.

Land and Sea Dept. beverage director Paul McGee will create a menu of cocktails for the evening, available alongside a selection of biodynamic and organic wines from Cream Wine Company, and beer from Laguinitas, a local member of the NRDC’s Brewers for Clean Water campaign. Protect This Land will be a zero-waste event.

In addition to general admission tickets, there will be a limited number of VIP tickets available. VIP tickets include five drinks per ticketholder as well as a super special tote bag takeaway.

Drink tickets for general admission guests (or VIP ticketholders beyond the five drinks included) must be purchased via Ticketfly in advance of the event.

All tickets are available to purchase on Ticketfly now.

We hope to see you there on the 26th!

Dungen at Garfield Park Conservatory

Land and Sea Dept. is excited to present Swedish rock band Dungen performing their new album, Häxan, at the beautiful Garfield Park Conservatory on Sunday, March 19.

The band will be performing the original score they were asked to create to Lotte Reiniger’s 1926 touchstone The Adventures of Prince Achmed, understood to be the oldest surviving full-length animated feature film. Inspired by the nature of the work and the characters portrayed within, the members of Dungen collaborated on themes to represent their take on the film’s narrative, and immersed themselves in the groundbreaking visual language of this landmark film. The result is Häxan, the group’s first instrumental album.

This is sure to be a memorable night—grab your tickets here.

Land and Sea Dept. is pleased to announce that Chef Andy Ricker of the Pok Pok empire will be kicking off the third season of From Good Stock, our annual fall supper club series.

Andy will be joining us for two dinners at LSD’s Garfield Park studio space, both happening on Friday, September 30 – the first at 6pm, and the second at 9:30pm. He’ll be cooking up a three course Tai Yai / Shan meal from the North of Thailand, featuring Pok Pok favorites.

LSD beverage director Paul McGee will be creating beverage pairings for the evening featuring Pok Pok’s line of drinking vinegars and Letherbee Gin, as well as beers from Marz Community Brewing and Pok Pok’s Som soda (and maybe even some Thai jelly beers!).

DJ Logan Bay will be providing a soundtrack of Thai jams.

Tickets are $100 for this intimate chance to enjoy Pok Pok’s acclaimed northern Thai cuisine in Chicago, including food and beverage.

Tickets will go on sale THIS FRIDAY, September 16, at NOON CENTRAL TIME, via the links below.

If you recall this summer’s Franklin Barbecue events, you’ll remember that tickets for these pop-ups tend to go quickly (very, very quickly), so don’t sleep on it — set your alarms and clear your Friday lunch hour. These tickets won’t last long, and once they’re gone, they’re gone.
