Over the course of 2015 (and beyond), Land and Sea Dept. has had the great pleasure of working with Illinois Humanities on a monthly dinner and lecture series, Elective Studies, organized by Humanities program manager (and friend) Jane Beachy.

Illinois Humanities “works to build dialogue across all sectors of society to examine issues important to democracy in the focus areas of public policy, media and journalism, business, and art.” The non-profit uses the “humanities as tools to stimulate discussion,” creating “experiences across Illinois through programming, events, and grantmaking to engage a diverse public on ideas and issues that matter.”

The Elective Studies series, made possible by the generous support of The Chicago Community Trust and The Joyce Foundation, seeks to expose artists to broader intellectual disciplines with the hopes of them finding inspiration for content and form in the larger world around them, beyond their immediate social or working environments.

Guest chefs have included Hunter Moore (Parson’s Chicken & Fish), Mickey Neely (The Moonlighter), and Mike Simmons (Rootstock), with beverage pairings from LSD beverage director Paul McGee.

Guest lecturers have included astrophysicist Shan Larson (Adler PlanetariumNorthwestern), microbiologist Sean Gibbons (Argonne National LaboratoryUniversity of Chicago), doctor Rachel Havrelock (University of Chicago) and doctor Allison McCracken (DePaul University – we encourage you to view their presentations, below.

LSD art director Drew Ryan has managed the design and visual elements for the series, creating posters and social media components for the entire run.
