For this project – our second involving film – we had the great pleasure of debuting the documentary film Sign Painters to an enthusiastic and receptive Chicago audience.

Filmmakers Faythe Levine and Sam Macon began documenting the work of traditional hand-lettered signmaking artists in 2010, and the resulting film is the first anecdotal history of the craft. Following “dedicated practitioners” using “time honored methods” and an “appreciation for quality and craftsmanship”, the documentary is an engaging, stirring look at an art form that has changed dramatically over the decades, one that is – thankfully – experiencing a resurgence.

Both Levin and Macon were on hand for the sold out screenings, where they introduced the work, led a cocktail reception and signed copies of the companion book, Sign Painters.

Artist, designer and sign painter Jeff Canham was kind enough to contribute the artwork used for our promotional poster. The screenings were held at the Logan Theatre in the Logan Square neighborhood in Chicago.
